INNOVATION: As a research chemist and former owner of a research and development company, Michael J. Gerace has developed, and commercialized numerous adhesive and sealant products for both contruction and automotive applictions. Gerace's Roof Repairs Inc. is providing an economic method for turning recycled paint wastes into products for roofing applications.
Michael J. Gerace is a Brooklyn-born research chemist and the former owner of a Dayton, Ohio-based research and development company.
While on a trip to visit his son in Charleston, the chemist and owner of Roof Repairs Inc. saw an opprotunity to put his work of almost two decades to a practical test.
I felt I had to step up and in the words of The Eagles, 'Take it to the Limit,'" Gerace said. "I immediately liked the area when I came down back in 2000. I took time to talk with people at the Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce. They were very helpful and the rest is all part of a process that began 19 years ago."
Today, Roof Repairs has used Gerace's technology for recycling construction wastes and substantially reduced costs to replace leaky flat roofs while reducting solid (roof tear-offs) and liquid (old paint) wastes that would normally end up in a landfill.
"We recently worked with The Beach Co. to recycle 200 55-gallon drums of paint wastes. We've also converted 5,000 gallons of wastes from automotive plants," Gerace said.
The resultant product, a watertight sealant is marketed under Gerace's Aster companies and its brands. In the process, Roof Repair Inc. has become a leader in the growing industry of practical and environmentally responsible construction companies through focus on efficiency and practicality.
"We combined two R&D companies as part of Phase I with manufacturing as a vertical component," Gerace said.
"There are roofs everywhere, but we are, at the moment, a very tiny company, providing a consumer service and creating patents&mdashall with 11 people. My sense is we need to start looking beyond the tri-county."
That next level, Phase II of Gerace's plan, is to grow Roof Repairs' core roofing business in South Carolina and use the profits to expandvthe recycling roofing efforts beyond the state.
"We beleive that eventually strategic partnerships and or technical licensing will be the best route to expand the technology worldwide, and we're working with the chamber to create a strategic plan," Gerace said.
